Aortopulmonary Connection Exercise Concerns

Shone’s Complex patients with mitral stenosis should avoid contact sports and other forms of strenuous activity. Patients with aortic stenosis and residual hypertension may also be restricted from strenuous exercise. It is important that they be tested regularly to determine safe levels of exercise.

In the absence of mitral stenosis, exercise guidelines will depend on the degree of recovery from treatment, the degree of aortic stenosis, and the status of coarctation repair.

Anyone with congenital heart disease, repaired or non-repaired, should consult with their cardiologist about physical activity to review the risks.
